ABOUT US

In 1946, Maria O. Giuliano and Maria G. Lalli founded the American-Italian Professional and Business woman's Club (AMIT).

The purpose of the club is to further cultural, charitable and social functions, emphasizing Italian culture. AMIT derives its membership from women who are of Italian descent and have distinguished themselves in their own field in business or professional circles. At one time, AMIT was the female equivalent of the Italian American Chamber of Commerce.

Maria O. Giuliano, co-founder and first president of AMIT Club, was a community-oriented woman active in many chaitable and cultural organizations and dedicated to the Italian community. In 1909, together with her husband, Vincent Giuliano, she began editing La Tribuna Italiana del Michigan, now The Italian Tribune.

Born in Genoa, Italy, she was educated at the Dramatic Academy of Florence. As an actress in Italy, she was an understudy to Eleanora Duse. A devout Catholic, she was very active in many Catholic organizations and belonged to the Third Order of St. Francis.

Her close friend, Mrs. Maria G. Lalli, co-founder of AMIT, was closely identified with charitable organizations. She was proud of her Italian heritage and was the founder of the Italian Radio Hour. As owner and president of Universal Wine and Liquor, she was the first woman in the U.S. to be granted an importer’s license.

She was also the first woman in the State of Michigan to be given the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity by the Italian Government, for her untiring work on behalf of the Italian community.

In 1946, two awards were established: the Maria Giuliano Scholarship Award and the Maria Lalli Charity Award. In 1972, the Minerva Maiullo Cultural Fund was also established.
